Minister Uwimana urges youth to reject genocide ideology and protect Rwanda’s unity
On 11 April 2026, Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Hon. Consolée Uwimana, joined residents of Muyumbu Sector in Rwamagana District for the 32nd commemoration of Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi in 1994.
Speaking during the commemoration event, Minister Uwimana emphasized that the 100 days of remembrance are a sacred period to honour the lives of those who were killed simply because of who they were, restore their dignity, ensuring that they are never forgotten, and reaffirm the nation’s determination to ensure that genocide never happen again.
She expressed concern that, thirty-two years after the Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi, some victims’ remains are still undiscovered, noting that this reality demonstrates that some individuals continue to withhold information about the inhumated bodies, and urged anyone with such information to come forward so that all victims may be laid to rest with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Minister Uwimana urged all Rwandans to remain vigilant against genocide ideology, warning that divisive and discriminatory beliefs still persist within some families and across the region, threatening the unity that Rwandans have worked hard to build, and she called on parents and guardians to instill values of unity, truth, patriotism, and mutual respect in younger generations.
She further reminded the youth that they have an important role in preserving Rwanda’s history and protecting the country’s future. She encouraged them to reject attempts to mislead them with hatred, genocide denial and ideology, or revisionist narratives, and instead become champions of national unity and development.
The Minister paid commended the former RPA Inkotanyi soldiers, under the leadership of His Excellency President Paul Kagame, for their courage in stopping the Genocide against the Tutsi, liberating the country, and creating the foundation for peace, reconciliation, and progress.
She also commended survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi for their exceptional resilience, forgiveness, and determination to rebuild their lives. Their courage, she said, remains a powerful lesson in perseverance and a pillar in Rwanda’s continued journey toward unity and sustainable development.
